Sadly, it is not a banned practice to harvest fins overseas.
It's an accepted practice of utilizing shark by-catch. Fishermen
can collect as much as they want, process it (usually dried and
shreaded) and ship it out. Problem is, with the market demand
and price paid for it at the wholesale level, fishermen and
targeting the fish specifically and use the chop-and-drop
method of harvest. Really sucky scary practice I know. On
Llamas Island off Hong Kong's Victoria Island I saw hundreds of
barrels of dried shark fins that were prepped for shreading.
Some of the fins were the size of 2" sided triangles...
obviously from very young sharks.
