Try Lover's Cove for snorkeling or the Dive park at Avalon for either snorkeling or a dive. Usually protected and if you do mid-week, will save $$$'s and have it pretty much to yourself - gear shops there rent what you'll need - bring your C card and check for hours of operation of mid-week. Take the Catalina Express or other boat to the island - about $60 pp rt.

Alwasy lots of life there in these 2 places, the vis is usually good.
