I've noticed the die off in both La Jolla Cove and Malibu last month. In LJ Cove not only has the surface kelp decreased but also the large beds of surf grass in the shallower spots are dying or dead.
Interesting, after diving with bad viz and warm temps (8ft and 72deg surface) in the Cove, I remarked same to divers gearing up in the park and they said that the kelp sloughs its outer layers in warm temperatures, reducing the visibility. I had never heard that before and could not vouch for it.
