If you are going for mainly halibut, I suggest giving a 4 or 5 foot pole spear a tried. For many years I've used the 38 special for halibut and it is a big hassle after the shoot. Pole spear is cheaper, lighter and you can pin the halibut down after the shoot. They tend to swim away like an out of control kite when using a spear gun with too much slack.
Any other sport fish, the Riffe would be a great choice.
I just got a 40" 27lbs halibut last month with the pole spear, if it was my 38 special, I defiantly would have lost it due to a gut shoot.
