hey diver z,

diving there is not too dissimilar to california channel islands diving. no real coral formations like the carribean or central america but some similar fish species to the carribean. lot's of different morays, etc, etc. the diving there is as good or better than california but that's subjective i would guess. it's hard not to like the kelp forrests! the desert meeting the sea of cortez is a pretty nice feature as well, though. extremely heathy marine life in loreto. massive pods of dolphins, more morays than you can shake a stick at and a many wonderful beaches on the offshore islands.

we went in june which i wouldn't recommend unless you like poor vis (plankton blooms, although lot's of fish), colder water and 90 plus outside temps. september and october seem to be the better months as the vis improves dramatically and the water warms. we've dove la paz as well and i found loreto to be far better.

as far as hotels go...stay away from the "la pinta" even though it's on the beach. if you talk to bruce at dolphin dive, ask him about the american owned hotel just south of his dive shop. unfortunately, i forgot the name. a beautiful little place tucked away and about 75-a-night to boot. i wish we had stayed there.

and food? a wonderful little argentinian place and another little coutyard place that served the best mole' i've ever had. most places don't take credit cards or travelers cheques ffs so bring plenty of cash.

in between bigger dive trips it's still a nice, quick getaway. bruce and susan speck (who wrote diving baja incidentally)are wonderful people and have a nice little dive establishment there. i recommend them highly.
