The major manufacturers combat this by artificial setting prices for gear (which may or may not be legal), but this leaves them wide open to smaller brands undercutting them. I've hear that in Europe the model has switched to diving clubs that provide gas and training, with the gear purchased online. This model makes the most sense to me. The only way I see the small dive store surviving is by building a strong dive club/community around it and basically serving as a fancy travel agent/tour guide. DEMA is now at least half dive travel.
