I could never ask someone to replace my gear.

If you asked him to clip it off and he didn't, that is a "Never gonna dive with him again" in my book.

If he got wasted and threw it off in a lark. Perhaps you might request a replacement.
But ask once.
People of merit pay for their mistakes. They take pride in it.

A friend of mine stepped on my mask on HIS boat. How it got in harms way no one knows. It has to ultimately be my fault since I am in charge of my gear. He immediately offered to replace it. I immediately refused the offer.
"You don't take me diving and wind up owing me for anything... want some more chips?"
