I took these pictures of a Xystreurys liolepis (Fantail Sole) last Saturday afternoon November 24, 2007 just East of Johnson Rock at Catalina Island. I first thought this was a Paralichthys californicus (California Halibut) because it was large (75 cm in length), however my first impression was wrong.

The area had many Hemisquilla californiensis (Mantis Shrimp) holes. I even got pictures of a couple of Mantis Shrimp. This was especially interesting because the FishBase page on Xystreurys liolepis says they feed almost exclusively on crustaceans.
