According to Patrick Smith, the netters are required to pul up the nets after 48 hours. This is obviously abandoned, illegal and destructive. If you dive any of the wrecks between L.A. Harbor, Huntington Beach and the oil rigs you've seen these black flags everywhere. I remember when I was young and adventerous I saw one and assumed it was a marker for a "secret" wreck. I tied off on the float and dropped down solo. After about 130 feet of nothing I ascended. I'm glad I didn't find a net that day, or have a net find me.
I've been diving with Ross for more than five years now, and knowing that someone who is adventerous without being wreckless can get caught is enough to keep me away from these invisible killers. I won't be making any night dives on the Olympic II any time soon.
