What kind of filters did you get? The filters in the kits are usually the lower end models. I have never had a any filter noticeably effect focus.

I use Hoya Super HMC or Heliopan filters. My favorite circular polarizer is a very thin Heliopan. I use it on my Olympus e-410 and C8080.
