I am all for solo diving, same ocean buddy system, meet you at the swimstep. As long as you are comfortable with your own skills. I had this confirmed when one of my old dive buddies panicked in 15' of water, swam over to me and proceded to rip my reg from mouth. I held my breath and calmly swam us to the surface. I dive every week with up to 4 other divers, mostly night dives, we usually pair into teams and start out as buddies, then wind up separating. This has always worked for us, the above incident is the only mishap we have had in 20 plus years. To me there is no debate, just competent divers functioning freely in the ocean.
