I was referring to myself. In my first 10 years of diving, I used up a number of regular buddies.
Diving the San Mateo Coast was always hairball. I still have an incredibly healthy respect for currents from those dives. If I had taken someone who made a mistake I would have always felt bad about it. I knew the dangers. Maybe I was crazy about my
personal safety, but I knew what I could do and I didn't extend my comfort with risky dives to others.
In the last 10 years, many of my dives were in places I wouldn't feel comfortable taking anyone I didn't know was
a seriously experienced diver. It would have made things rather difficult. The deep open dives off of La Jolla were a good
example. Diving the North Coast the same. There are just too many situations where I just don't feel I can take
responsibility for other divers safety.
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
