A very personal reason: I require nearly 100% concentration on me, my gear, and my immediate environment. I don't think you'd want to dive with me knowing I have scant percentage left to deal with YOUR emergency. Also, as we all (should) know, u/w communication is difficult even in the best conditions. Case in point: on a wreck dive I wrote on a slate, WHERE IS ANCHOR CHAIN? Held it up to three "buddies"; not one of them knew what I was referring to! They thought I was asking about the wreck's chain. Needless to say, I found the chain to our dive boat SOLO and ascended safely.
