In what is mostly a one-sided thread I thought I'd interject some thoughts that offer a different point of view:

A buddy can provide an additional air source in the event of an OOA;

A buddy can provide a calm head in an emergency;

A buddy can help free a diver from a gill-net and/or entrapment;

A buddy can offer assistance in a narc'd and/or toxing situation;

A buddy can help locate a guideline on a OE silt out;

Obviously the above isn't nearly an all inclusive list of the numerous advantages that a buddy can provide, so if elevating the risk level of a dive by foregoing the benefits of safety is your dive option of choice, my only advise to you is good luck and make sure you tell your family you love them before you leave for the dive. Adding unnecessary risk to a dive by foregoing dive buddies is less then a wise idea.

I realize that many that have posted to this thread have long since accepted these additional risks, but for those that are viewing the thread and may not yet appreciate how much risk is added to the dive, I thought I'd offer a counterbalance.
