I let the captain and/or Divemaster know. I deploy it for my safety stop. I let them know I deploy it at 60-30 Ft and come up slowly. This is key on drift dives. On anchor dives I let them know I'll use it if I've lost the anchor line and feel I need to come up in the open water and I'm afraid of curious boats.
