Its probably habitat loss and over-fishing as much as problems further down the food chain -- although sardine overfishing is one of the causes of the anoxic zones off the Oregon coast. I don't know what depth Salmon swim at while at sea, but if they suddenly encountered an anoxic zone they might not have the behavior or time to swim out of it.

Could all be related but Salmon have additional habitat issues with the rivers especially with the damns and reduced water supplies.
