Which San Nicholas Island are you talking about? The one that is part of the Channel Island chain? To my knowledge, there is no place to stay on that island. Diving may be for advanced divers you don't want to start there.

Take a look at Catalina for starters. They have a dive park, plenty of places to stay and dive boats are available to get to other spots on the island. But if you go there, start at the dive park. It's a good place for beginners. It offers a really diverse dive day. And tons of fish too!
