There is a way to sex abalone but it is not recommended as it involves handling them. I learned this from John McMullen who ran the “Ab Lab” in Pt. Hueneme when they used to raise red abalone brood. I used to provide John with gravid abalone under a valid collectors permit. The gonad (the large crescent shaped organ you can see by lifting up the foot) in females is light yellow/pink and males is gray/tan. When they are gravid, this organ is much larger/swollen compared to when they are not, duh. As with humans but unlike lobsters, the somewhat younger ones(4 –5 inches) breed better.
