Dive Report: Ship Rock and Catalina with the Sea Divers aboard the Magician : 4/12/08 |
Posted by Chris on April 18, 2008 at 12:19:43: Last Saturday April 12, 2008 the Sea Divers went to Catalina Island aboard the Magician. It was a beautiful sunny day and the sea was as calm as a lake. Since everyone arrived at the boat early, we left the dock about 6:40 AM. The magician was the only boat at Ship Rock when we arrived. Captain Jerry double anchored and we got into the water at 9AM. The visibility varied from 20 feet to about 40 feet depending on the location. The water was very cold. It was about 54°F near the surface, and 51°F at about 100 feet. There were Hermissenda crassicornis everywhere. There were also a few small lingcod (Ophiodon elongates) and some very large dark brown Kelp Bass Paralabrax clathratus that were far to skittish to get a photo of. When we surface we found that we had been joined by several boats, including the Pacific Star and the Garibaldi. While I was doing my surface time Roger Carlson pointed out to me that there was an undescribed nudibranch species Dendronotus sp.on the Kelp at around 50 feet. So on the second dive at Ship Rock Kathryn and I went looking for them. The current had shifted slightly and the visibility dropped to 10-15 feet. The temperature felt slightly warmer. Our third dive was at Eagle Reef. The water at Eagle Reef was 56°F, but the visibility was still low. Besides many Hermissenda crassicornis, there were also some Janolus barbarensis to be found. Our last dive was about midway between Arrow Point and Starlight Cove. On this dive while accompanied by Manuel Rubio we searched for critters in the sand. We found an uncooperative Fantail Sole (Xystreurys liolepis), a slightly more cooperative C-) Turbot (Pleuronichthys coenosus) and some Anemones. As we left the Island there was a large pod of Long-Beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus capensis) feeding. Captain Jerry stopped for a few minutes so we could watch them. It was another great Sea Divers trip and the crew of the Magician took great care of us.
