The first Los Angeles County 2008 Rocks, Rips, and Reefs class will be held Saturday morning May 17 at Leo Carillo State Park (South beach). Registration is at 7:30 AM and the class starts at 8 AM.

Conducted by certified Los Angeles County Scuba instructors, the Rocks, Rips, and Reefs course includes a short educational seminar covering safe beach diving skills, certain aspects of the local marine environment, and other valuable, site-specific information. Conditions permitting, the seminar is followed by an in-water demonstration and practice session that includes a skin diving tour of the actual dive site.

Topics and skills covered in the course include:

ē Choosing appropriate entry and exit points, and safe entry and exit skills

ē Identifying, anticipating, and navigating hidden obstacles in the surf zone

ē How to use the oceanís natural wave motion to your advantage

ē How to plan your dive by reading the oceanís surface and using tide tables

ē How to find interesting stuff at each location
Participants are required to wear a full wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and fins (preferably open heel with booties). A hood and gloves are recommended.

SCUBA certification is not required in order to participate in 3Rís courses! New divers welcomed!

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
