Sounds more like a dive “program” for doting parents succumbing to their progeny’s whines seeking instant gratification. Hope I’m wrong.

I’m not letting my almost ten year old granddaughter get her skin diving certification until she improves her swimming skills which she is working on now. Maybe I’m just overprotective, but I want to know she can handle herself in the water in case she is separated from her adult buddy. As for scuba, I’ll stick to the old standards and confirming she is mature enough to handle situations she may run into that could panic her. I’d apply same standards to others because safety is paramount.

Doesn’t anyone remember the tragic cases where a young or new diver’s mask flooded or they couldn’t clear and they bolted to the top, embolized, and died?

Sending a youngster to 96 feet on what amounts to basic training is like giving them a rifle and saying – ‘have fun hunting’.
