I believe this exercise was eliminated from all U.S. SCUBA programs many years ago due to the possibility of what happened in this situation. That may be why the instructor has been charged with a crime in this case. Way back in the 70's when I learned to dive it was a common last pool session exercise. I became an instructor in '81 and we were not allowed ( strongly discouraged) from allowing this type of training exercise.

This is very sad for the family of the student. I also feel bad for the diving instruction community and the instructor. To have a death of a student and then be served with criminal charges must be very devastating.
