You might try putting your camera in manual mode, pick an aperture and ASA/ISO setting, then put the camera on a tripod and experiment with different shutter speeds. At night this might mean some pretty long exposures. Sometimes it's posible to get cool night shots with the ocean waves blurred, etc.
