Stayed there before Cocos trip in July 2006. Great place to stay, nice food in the restaurant. A vivid memory of hearing howler monkeys off in the distance, the pouring rain, and the rumbling of the volcano. Pretty awesome
Didn't see any lava flows at night.
Highly reccomend going into town and having lunch at one of the sodas.
We also went to Baldi Hot Springs http://www.arenal.net/baldi-hot-springs.htm Instead of the much more expensive Tabacon hot springs. They have different levels and temps of hot springs, and most have a bar :)
