For easy dives I just carry it and don't bother clipping it. For anything where I'm worried about the entry or exit I like to stage the camera. We do this a lot at Point Lobos where the launch ramp is pretty slippery. Heavy and/or fragile gear gets put on a float then we get geared up, get into the water and fetch the camera, etc. from the float. Much easier to deal with the camera when you don't have a tank and weight belt on.
