To repeat myself, get informed and don’t take your information from Bulletin Boards.

The CDC site has extremely valuable information about PNG, specific forms of malaria and other diseases found there , drugs for the type of malaria in the region etc. It will not tell you exactly what YOU should do as it can not tell your specific itinerary, e.g. if and how long you will be on a boat, if so, how close the boat will anchor to shore, exactly where you travel in PNG on land (e.g. below or above 1800 meters) and how risk adverse you are to malaria vs side effects of the medications. Get informed and make your own informed decision. And of course, have a wonderful trip... There are definitely NO mosquitos under water.
