Bush Signs Executive Order To Allow Recreational Fishing In MPAs

In a move supported by the Center for Coastal Conservation, whose membership is composed of big game sportfishing groups and marine manufacturers, President Bush signed an Executive Order that allows recreational fishing in marine protected areas and other protected areas in federal waters. Ellen Peel, President of The Billfish Foundation – a member organization of the Center for Coastal Conservation -- said the Executive Order is “very significant as is the Administration’s on-going work on the Ocean Action Plan as it relates to conservation and the nation’s offshore sportsmen.”

President Bush amended an Executive Order 12962 of June 7, 1995 signed by President Clinton in order to “[ensure] that recreational fishing shall be managed as a sustainable activity in national wildlife refuges, national parks, national monuments, national marine sanctuaries, marine protected areas, or any other relevant conservation or management areas or activities under any Federal authority, consistent with applicable law.“
