In 1984 or 1985, some years before I took up diving and back when I was a science writer for the Orange County Register, I did a feature story on a project at the time to reseed the abalone population at Catalina. This was when it was known that the fishery was in serious trouble, but before it collapsed entirely and was closed. I still have a yellowed newspaper clip of the story from the ride I took on the Golden Doubloon with divers who were planting infant abs.
