I normally use a wing up here. I use a Mach V 40#, although a 30# would be better, they sent me a 40 and I didn't have the energy to argue about it.
Our backpack dives are more of a "look ma, no wing" kind of thing. We like to goof arouond and practice with no wing once in a while, but my deep offshore dives I do use the wing. My cold suit is 1/2", 3/8" in the arms. There's no way zI can go deep without a wing in that suit.I get way to heavy. My 7mil is easier to manage with no BC.
The kid on the left in that photo (Tao) is wearing a cheapy 7mil one piece there with a chest zip. The water that day was in the low 50's.
