I stayed there in 2007 on the way back from PNG. We checked the luggage on through (and yes we were changing airlines from Air Niugini to United). No problems. Rooms are nothing special but are clean and the convenience factor is awesome. Plus, the airport is more like giant upscale mall with occasional airport gates. Anything you want I suspect you could find it there.

Not sure if there is a way to claim your bags without clearing customs. Not that clearing customs there is bad. On the inbound flight we had a longer layover in Singapore so we cleared customs to explore a bit. Literally took less than 20 minutes from the time we walked off the plane to being in a cab. Most of that time was spent walking and not standing in line. Most incredible customs experience ever.
