The best "homebrew" is a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and distilled water. Alcohol isn't a good idea as it removes protective oils from the ear canal. Use the mixtures BEFORE you first dive and after the last dive of the day. The US Navy divers used DomeBoro (essentially the same as homebrew) and found that best results come from keeping the solution in each ear for at least ten-minutes.

Do NOT put object smaller than your elbow in your ear! That means no Q-tips!!!!!!
