The moisture in the ear is what triggers the breading ground for the infection. The alcohol both dries out the canal and kills germs. The vinegar dilutes the alcohol which lessens the drying and also helps to restore the proper bacteria count to the ear canal. Lanolin or mineral oil can be used to prevent the canal from becoming too dry.
Another option to lessen the drying effect of alcohol is to go with 1/3 each of alcohol, distilled water and vinegar.
