It sounds to me more like an intermittent electrical connection.
It could be due to a damaged cable, try swapping the cables to verify.
It could also be due to microscopy thin oxidation layers forming on the contacts. I clean all of the electrical contacts (including batteries and strobes) in my camera systems once or twice a year with DeoxIT. One bottle should last you a lifetime.
