There is also the launch ramp at Marina del Rey, Chuck. It is a bit further to run to get to the island, but the security at the ramp parking lot is good, and there are many facilities withing walking distance - everything from California Pizza Kitchen to Ralph's to West Marine.

As for diving Catalina, I concur that the Two Harbors area has vastly more good diving opportunities than the Avalon-end of the island. And, if you're really moved by the spirit of discovery, and the conditions allow, you could make a day run to Santa Barbara Island.
