The times you see cars lined up at Podotti's or along the highway at the other spots are generally at minus tides. The majority of those people are rock pickers. Their range of depth is about waist high and that's it. All you have to do is go out to about 10 to 20 feet deep and the ab populations are by in large unaffected. Only about 5% of freedivers can get to 20 feet on the North Coast and have any time to do anything.
And yes, the conditions are another factor. It's a natural Darwinian cleanser of sorts.
