No way that an earthquake would make these few individuals strand themselves on the beach. I suspect that some sportboat got into them and they had the wrong tackle and every one that tore off the hook was mortally wounded. They made their way to the beach to avoid being prey.

It is an extremely rare phenomonon but fish also beach themselves, here is a fascinating example:
