A friend from long ago once told me a story about a similar crime. He and his friends used to dive off the Ventura coast; they would park along side the road and walk to the beach. Several times they (or their friends) had all of their gear stolen from their van while they were in the water. One time they brought a 'special' friend along, he didn't dive... They dropped him off a quarter mile before they got to their parking turnoff.

He said that the instant the last divers head submerged, a couple of men approached the van. Within seconds, they popped the back door and were inside.

The friend went straight to the van, jumped inside and closed the door behind himself....
