I'm not an expert on Hawaii, although I've dove lots of the Big Island. I got my butt kicked at Pahoehoe last time I dove it. The tide was turning over and it was a little big. I jumped in and went for a 10 mph ride out to sea. Aborted the dive, drained the BC and got beat up on the rocks but got in fine. I'd say if it looks questionable, don't dive it. I've also read stories on the currents around the islands. A healthy respect and all of the proper rescue gear, safety sausage, mirror, whistle, etc. would be a good idea. Take the pony tank also, as the Kona Coast drops off quickly in lots of places. Hawaii is the drowning capital of the world, although California probably takes a close second. Be safe. Too many people have been dying while diving lately. Check out CDNN dive board.
