When I hunt, I dive alone and don't use a second. It's just more gear to get in the way.

The clipping of the pressure gauge at the waist works fine when you have your compass on your wrist, but if it is on the console it is much easier to use clipped to the shoulder d-ring.

I have used both,and both have merits, but since most divers do not train to use the DIR set-up I mostly use a standard octopus when I dive with others.
