I enjoyed your narrative and pictures.
I have a question for you. Have you ever been diving on the Navy Base at Point Mugu? If you (or a single friend) would like to meet me at the Main Gate, you can jump in my car and I'll take us on-board the base. There is a nice cove there (one end has surfable waves - the other is the mouth of the estuary) and in the middle is fairly calm water with an abandoned pier which has been removed at the shore line, but there are stumps in deeper water. I've seen an 8-foot shark resting on the bottom, a few scattered halibut, and armies of crabs. My dive partner never wants to venture close to the estuary mouth because of surge, but I'm just positive there is more to see. There are huge tidal fluctuations in the estuary, so there can be quite a lot of surge. Weekends or Nov 11 (Veteran's Day - legal holiday) is good for me.
