On a recent Bug Hunting trip (October 13, 2009) at Talcott Shoals at Santa Rosa Island, California we were in the shallows near shore. This is an area that is normally only dove during hunting trips because at fist sight it is not the prettiest. However my bug hunting skills seemed to suck big time this day and I noticed quite a bit of unique macro life in the area.
One of the most unique things saw was a Artedius lateralis (Smoothhead Sculpin). This is a species I do not normally encounter, and I noticed that this one was using it's pectoral fins to cover itself with sand after each time it moved. I got a picture of it doing it just before I lost it.
The other interesting thing you will see is the color pattern fading as the shots progress.
