I'm with firewalker on this one, get rid of them. I had them on my hoses and went to inspect one day and found that my HP hose was totally cracked and rotten. On another reg set I have that is older than the one with rotten hoses, I have never had hose protectors on it and all the hoses are fine.
As far as I'm concerned hose protectors are useless and just add extra bulk.
