After some additional research I decided to pursue the possibility of the wreck being the DD658 USS Colahan. Using a list of shipmates from www.destroyers.org I was able to locate Mr. Bob Tidwell who was a member of the decommissioning crew. He confirmed that at the time of decommission there were only three 5 " guns and the ship was used for target practice at San Clemente.

So a very strong possibility.
