Posted by Jim on February 23, 2010 at 15:38:20: In Reply to: Scientists Zero In on Causes of Pelican Stranding Along California Coast posted by DFG on February 23, 2010 at 11:04:20: Similar die offs of pelicans, other sea birds, sea lions, etc., occur in the Galapagos Islands during el Nino events. The warmer waters drive the normal food fish to deeper waters and the birds/mammals die. This year's el Nino event in the southern hemisphere is affecting our local waters. While overfishing is an important factor, there are other causes to the lack of normal food stocks for the pelicans.
