No personal experience in this area, but I am told, by a diver who was looking for a dive buddy to do this with off a private boat, that you get awesome visibility and you see the big animals, tuna, shark, passing whales etc...if you are lucky. If you find a floating kelp paddy there will be lots of life under it, or other derbies. His dive plan was to drop a weighted line, hand on the line at the desired depth and chill for the allotted time.

I personally do not know of any local dive boats doing this. You might try http://www.Sundiver.net and see about chartering the Sundiver II and do a private charter. Small boat holds 6 divers.
