I live in WA state, dive here alot (and often in California too why I watch this board) and what the trend we see in this area is that many divers dive with a small alum pony bottle and regulator strapped to the tank. A completely redundant rig, and the reg has a long hose on it. Its oattached to the tank and not handed off if an emergency were to happen, plus gives the diver redundancy. Seems to work well for me.
