I love So Cal diving, have done it for years and continue to do so when business brings me that way, but I live in WA state.. and if you ever get the opportunity, do make a dive up here in the the area, or the San Juan Islands, or better yet further north you get into Canada on Vancouver Is at Port Hardy as it gets better.
Imagine diving Begg rock, or any outer island areas, or say San Miguel Is.. and put them "on steroids".. and thats what it is like up here. No giant kelp here tho.. no lobsters.. but other stuff instead. Very rich marine life.
Definetly dry suit diving.. and the currents here are everywhere and you have to plan dives at slack in some spots. Most boats do live boats here, drift dives. Lots of shordiving done too, there are no waves in Puget Sound.
