I had to do this a couple of dives ago.
Back-rolled off a boat and landed in kelp. It was clear when I got ready, then the boat drifted into kelp while I donned my fins.
Did what max said but doggonit the pesky kelp seemed to be trailing no mater what I did. You know that weird feeling like you are dragging something, but can't see it.
