Walt asked: "Did DAN include / separate out solo diving in its studies?"

Yes.

Out of the 947 fatalities studied, 817 of them of them had known buddy pairings (or lack thereof). In 130 of the cases, it was unknown as to what the buddy situation was (most liklely due to an absence of information in the report, not to it really being unknown).

I am unclear on if they classified fatalities involving buddy separation as solo or by the original buddy pairing.

Here are the numbers and percentages for the 817 as reported by DAN. You can draw your own conclusions:

Buddy pair - 500 (61%)
Group (undefined, but more than 2) - 117 (14%)
Trio - 115 (14%)
Solo - 85 (10%)
