Tri Marine Fish Company cannery of San Pedro to was sentenced to three years probation and assessed a $150,000 fine, with $40,000 going to the fishermen that were cheated by the false reporting of sardine catches.

Officials had discovered that the numbers on the outgoing shipping documents were much larger than the incoming landing receipts.

The landing receipts are used to pay the fisherman, and as the numbers used by fishery regulators. This is especially egregious since in the 1950's the sardines were fished to the edge of extinction and have only recovered in recent years. Not only was Tri Marine cheating the fishermen, but it was enabling over fishing of a regulated resource be lying to regulators.
